Assistants | With a practice that spans more than 40 years and a career that covers all areas of law, Fred Cogan is counsel to BrazeauSeller.LLP. His extensive résumé includes civil litigation, real estate, municipal work, banking and matrimonial law. In addition to giving advice to members of the firm, Fred conducts his own practice in the areas of corporate and commercial law, financing, commercial litigation, mortgage remedies, creditor and debtor law, bankruptcy and insolvency law, real estate law, municipal law, wills, estates and high profile domestic law.
Today, Fred appears before all courts, the Ontario Municipal Board, and various other boards, municipal councils and their committees. After attending Harvard Law School’s Continuing Education Course, he obtained certificates in both negotiation and mediation. Fred mediates and arbitrates a variety of complex matters, settling most of the mediations he handles.
In addition to his notable legal career, Fred takes great pride in his volunteer work, serving on several committees and organizations throughout the Ottawa community. He was an instructor for the Law Society of Upper Canada Bar Admissions Course, a member of the City of Ottawa Committee for the Disabled, governor of the Elmwood School for Girls, vice president of the Ottawa New Edinburgh Tennis and Canoe Club, chairman of the Traffic Committee and a member of Planning Committee for the Village of Rockcliffe Park, director of the Rideau Club, and chairman of the House Committee and governor of Beth Shalom Synagogue.
Fred attended the University of Ottawa, where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in economics, as well as his law degree. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1965, with honours. Fred is also a former member of the Bar of British Columbia.
Fred and his wife, Elizabeth Jane, have six children who are in the fields of radio broadcasting, education, Canadian investment banking, architecture, neuroscience and international investment banking. Fred is an active sports fan and participates in snowshoeing, snorkeling and golf. Bar Admissions Ontario, 1965 (with Honours)
