James Katz came to BrazeauSeller.LLP in December 2007 from a local boutique intellectual property law (IP) firm, where he primarily practiced IP litigation (trade-marks, copyrights and patents) before the Federal Court of Canada and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. A Registered Trade-Mark Agent, James works regularly with his clients in the acquisition, protection and licensing of their trade-mark rights, including the prosecution of trade-mark applications and representing clients in trade-mark opposition proceedings.  James also has practical experience in defending his clients’ business interests via actions for trade slander, passing off, breach of confidence and unfair competition under the Competition Act.

 From 2004 to 2005, James worked alongside some of Canada’s most experienced trial lawyers as counsel for Via Rail Canada Inc. and Canada Post Corporation at the Commission of Inquiry into the Sponsorship Program and Advertising Activities (Gomery Inquiry).

Prior to attending law school at the University of New Brunswick, James earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia (UBC), with a major in religious studies and a focus on anthropological archaeology. In 1995, he successfully completed UBC’s archaeological field school at Scowlitz, BC, where he helped to unearth and document a First Nation’s village site more than 5,000 years old.

James’ volunteer activities include membership in Ottawa’s Chevra Kadisha (Jewish Burial Society), and a business partnership with the OCRI Entrepreneurship Centre.  James is currently on the board of directors of Tamir, an Ottawa based agency that provides services to developmentally disabled adults, and is Legal Counsel and an ex-officio director of the Better Business Bureau of Ottawa.  He is married to Sharonne and they are the proud parents of their daughters, Amalya and Eliana.
